How A Metal Roll Forming Machine Works

Roll Forming Machine Manufacturers

A roll forming machine works by fabricating particular presentations from long strips of metal. Different metals are used, though typically, these configurations are crafted from coiled steel. Roll forming plays a part in a considerable number of industries. In the majority of applications, the necessary cross-section profile of the piece has been designed intentionally. This means the machine can manipulate the metal as required.

Metal roll forming machines can also be used to cut metal into a certain shape and for roll punching too.

To begin the process, metal is fed into the roll forming machine, which will then be passed through various stages until the final product is produced at the end. Most machines tend to work on a continuous cycle, making them extremely efficient at mass-producing precise metal parts.

There are several different stations within the machine which uses fixed rollers to pass the metal from one to another, bending and compressing where necessary. Each set of rollers manipulates the metal further as it passes through until the desired shape has been achieved.

This progressive metal bending technique means that the precise cross-sectional configuration is realized every time, thus creating uniform end products. Roll forming machines work quickly, and most models work at anything between 30 up to an impressive 600 feet of metal per minute. This is why they are widely used in industries where the efficient mass production of metal parts is crucial such as the automotive and aviation industries.

Roll forming machines are also excellent at precision metalwork and can be used to accurately reproduce the same specific measurements while requiring little to no finishing work. The devices can be set to ensure that the end product is exceptionally detailed, so when it comes to exact measurements, these machines can be relied upon to produce the same time and time again.

The Roll Forming Process

A typical standard roll forming machine can be divided into different sections. The first part of the line is where the metal enters the machine and is fed through from this point. It usually starts its journey as part of a continuous coil or large sheet.

The second section consists of the station rollers, and this is where the metal will begin to be manipulated into the desired shape. The rollers have duality in that they both bend the metal and drive it forwards to the next section of the line.

After passing through the station rollers, the metal will arrive at the cut off press. This is where the metal will be cut into a length according to the measurements that have been programmed into the machine. Once the cut has taken place, the metal will finally be passed through to the exit station, where the part leaves the roll former onto a conveyor belt or table where it will be collected or moved on.

Contemporary Roll Forming Machines

Advances in technology mean that modern roll forming machines are high-powered and proficient systems. The inclusion of CAD/CAM systems has added significant benefits to controlling the manufacturing process, meaning that the machines themselves can spot imperfections or errors which massively reduce the number of damaged products and, therefore, product waste.
