Roll Forming Machine Types

A rain gutter system helps divert rainwater from the foundations of a building to ensure its structural integrity remains intact. The majority of houses that are used for residential or commercial properties have rain gutter systems. These systems are created using various machines for manufacturing them precisely and on a vast scale.

You may be looking at roll forming machines to install gutters on your home or set up a business to manufacture these products. Either way, it is crucial to understand why gutters are imperative for a building’s structure, the types of machines available, and how they function.

Why are gutters important?

Gutters collect water that runs off the roof of a building and effectively carries it to a downspout where the water is emptied onto the ground, sufficiently far away from the building’s structure.

When choosing between different types of gutters, a homeowner or builder must consider:

  • the size of the roof to ensure the gutters are long enough
  • the slope of the roof to determine the pitch of the gutters
  • the average rainfall in the area to decide the size and type of gutter required

Rain gutters can be crafted from many different materials. The most popular choices include aluminum, copper, zinc, steel, and vinyl.

How are gutters made?

Generally, most metal gutters are manufactured through the roll forming process and can be seamless or sectional. Both in-plant and portable machines are used.

Seamless gutters are a popular choice as leaking risk is minimized due to the elimination of seams. Sectional gutters come in separate pieces that must be joined together.

What kinds of gutter profiles are available?

Typical seamless gutter machines are:

  • Fascia
  • K-Style
  • Box Gutter
  • Half Round
Fascia gutters

Fascia gutters are seamless units and are a popular, contemporary choice as they are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They are larger than other gutter types, so useful for homes in areas that experience frequent and heavy rainfall. This type is easy to install and cost-effective too.

Fascia gutters can be directly installed onto the framing; this means that the smooth face of the gutter conceals the edge of the roof’s rafter tails and stops water from pouring over the side, which could damage the building’s structure.

K-Style gutters

The K-style is a robust and durable choice with a flat bottom and profiled face reminiscent of crown molding. They have a decorative shape making them a pleasing addition to the outside of a building too.

Box gutters

Box gutters are also known as ‘square gutters.’ They don’t boast the same design features as the K-Style or Fascia gutters. However, they are a cost-effective option and a popular choice for commercial buildings or buildings that are more functional, where style and aesthetics are not a primary concern. The handle is deep enough to cope with a lot of water runoff, making them an efficient and long-lasting option.

Half-round gutters

Half-round gutters are semi-circles that are most commonly seen on older-style properties. They come in lots o different colors and are incredibly proficient at draining rainwater due to their curved sides. However, they aren’t able to hold as much water as other choices. Half-round gutters are usually manufactured from aluminum or copper – both are robust and stand up to severe weather very effectively.

Roll forming machines can effectively create either the fascia, K-style, box, or half-round gutters to ensure that the end product is precisely made to the specifications, and turns out excellent quality and extremely robust.
