Setting up a manual decoiler

If you are looking for any roll forming machine that will run using coils, you’ll require a decoiler to feed the coiled metal into the machine.

Ensuring that the decoiler you choose aligns with your project needs is a critical component in keeping the roll former working productively, after all - without the feeding the material into the machine, it cannot operate!

Decoilers are used everywhere in the roll forming industry. Naturally, roll forming machines have changed according to advances in technology and machine design and decoilers have had to keep up with the changes. If you choose to use a manual decoiler, it is important that you set it up correctly to ensure you can get up and running in no time, and don’t run into any problems.

Setting up a manual decoiler - a step-by-step guide

Setting up a manual decoiler involves a few steps:

Find a suitable location

Select a flat and stable surface to place the decoiler. Ensure that the location is close to the material you need to uncoil.

Assemble the decoiler

Assemble the decoiler according to the manufacturer's instructions. Most manual decoilers consist of a base, spindle, and brake system. Attach the spindle to the base and ensure that it is secure.

Load the material onto the decoiler

Lift the coil of material and place it onto the spindle. Ensure that the material is centered and aligned with the spindle. Tighten the brake system to prevent the coil from unwinding too quickly.

Adjust the brake tension

The brake tension should be set according to the weight and thickness of the material being uncoiled. If the tension is too tight, the material may become damaged, and if it is too loose, it may unwind too quickly.

Uncoil the material

Turn the spindle manually to uncoil the material. Use a pair of gloves to handle the material and guide it as it unwinds. Keep an eye on the tension and adjust it as necessary.

Cut the material: When the desired length of material has been uncoiled, cut it using a suitable cutting tool. Ensure that the cut is clean and straight.

Repeat the process

Continue to uncoil the material as needed, cutting it to the desired length each time.

It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions when setting up and operating a manual decoiler to ensure safe and effective use.
